Angel Locsin recently signed contracts with both ABS-CBN and Star Cinema last April 27 at the ABS-CBN compound. Also present at the contract signing were Ethel Ramos, Angel’s manager; ABS-CBN President Charo Santos-Concio; and Star Cinema managing director Malou Santos. Angel signed a three-year four-picture deal with Star Cinema.
“I’m very happy. Itong isang movie magsisimula na itong May kasama si papa Dingdong (Dantes) at siAngelica Panganiban. Ang magdi-drect si Ruel Bayanina napakagaling na director. I’m very excited na maka-trabaho si Direk Ruel. Yung isa naman yung kasama sila Bea Alonzo, Toni Gonzaga, Angelica Panganiban at saka ako. Tapos yung pangatlo may pinaplano kaming pelikula with Vhong Navarronaman. Kung anong type ng pelikula, abangan niyo na lang (laughs),” she shared. Angel admitted that there are also plans for a reunion movie with her original love team partner Richard Gutierrez.
Angel denied reports that she was recently on the grounds of her former network, which sparked rumors of a possible transfer. “Yun na nga may chismis nga. Baka yung mga dating mga posters ko nakikita nila pero hindi. Minsan gusto ko dumalaw pero hindi pupuwede (laughs). Hindi ko alam kung saan nagsimula yun,” she clarified.
Angel said she is also looking forward to starting work on a new television series later this year. “May gagawin akong teleserye. Kung sino makakasama ko abangan niyo (laughs) kasi inaabangan ko rin. Pa-alagwa na siyathis year sisimulan na yung teleserye na gagawin. And bukod sa Toda Max na ginagawa namin ngayon with TitoRobin (Padilla) and Vhong Navarro,” she said.
The 27-year-old actress admitted she is very much satisfied with the way her career is going ever since she transferred to the Kapamilya network. “Ako lagi kong sinasabi na thankful talaga ako sa ABS-CBN especially to Star Cinema kasi binibigyan talaga ako ng proyektong de-kalibre talaga. Yung mas makikilala ka bilang isangactress, narerespeto ka sa craft mo. Iba talaga mag-alaga ang ABS-CBN. I’m excited. Happy lang ako na naging official na Kapamilya ulit ako ng ABS-CBN,” she said.
Angel said that the she has learned a lot over the years and the recognition she has gotten has also boosted her confidence in acting and has made her happy to remain a part of ABS-CBN. “Marami kasi like yung mgaawards na natatanggap ko simula nung lumipat ako sa ABS-CBN. Sobrang laking bagay. Sa mga kaibigan, sa mga nakakasama ko ngayon, mga kahit hindi tungkol sa trabaho, kahit sa personal, malaki na tulong talaga sa akin.”
Angel added that she wants to always do her best for her fans and her co-workers. “Bilang artista pinaghihirapan ko talaga yung trabaho ko at gusto ko talaga bawat project may mapapakita ako na mas bago para sa audience and siyempre para sa patuloy na sumusuporta, mga fans ko, na kung hindi naman dahil sa kanila, wala naman tayo dito,” she said.

UNOFFICIALLY YOURS – Mila Kunis and Justin Timberlake’s ‘Friends with Benefits’ is one of the bravest films of 2011 – it’s fun, bold, entertaining and raw. We love films that mirror the real drama and the real facts of life – we all like fairy-tale love stories but in this modern day and age, not all romance are based on what we read in the book – whether we admit or not, sex plays a vital role in every relationship nowadays and, more often than not, it becomes the key factor to make a relationship work. Without a shadow of a doubt, this film was Cathy Garcia-Molina’s inspiration when she created Unofficially Yours. And because Philippine cinema is not used to these type of movies, the audience were too curious about it, the steamy scenes spread like a virus and next thing we know, everyone’s hooked in this John Lloyd Cruz – Angel Locsin starrer.
Unofficially Yours is ‘Friends with Benefits’ or ‘No Strings Attached’ given a Filipino flavour. It’s definitely an adult material but not overly obscene. Apart from the unique concept (at least for the Filipino viewing public), the core strength of this film lies in its lead casts. We all love Angel Locsin – beauty and talent in one – in this movie, Angel showed us her different side, the wilder ‘Angel’ that is far from what we see in her TV series. Angel’s acting in this picture wasn’t her best but she managed to gave justice to the role that was entrusted to her. The attitude is there but you wouldn’t really think Angel would be like that in real life (the likes of Anne Curtis or Angelica Panganiban would have been better choices) – she has a very innocent face which makes it a bit awkward to watch her doing ‘it’ with John Lloyd Cruz. And speaking of JLC, it is very refreshing to see him in a whole new different set-up – far from his boy-next-door or hopeless romantic image (although you could still see touches of those characterization). There were not a lot of opportunities for him to showcase his best asset – his acting prowess. The approach was very light and I think Garcia-Molina’s aim was to reinvent JLC and show his ‘cheeky’ side – it did work but the latter part of the film kind of brought him back to the JLC we used to see in his previous films with Bea Alonzo. The supporting cast are okay – not sure why they’ve actually given Yayo Aguila’s daughters those roles (as JLC’s sisters) – they need A LOT of acting lessons and it made JLC scenes (where they’re in it) uninteresting and dragging. Not a lot of to talk about in terms of the technical side of the film. The editing is good – cinematography, production design and make-up – average (nothing stand out IMO).
I admire the bravery of Star Cinema to bring the Filipino audience something ‘out of the box’ and far from the typical rom-coms that we’ve seen but I personally don’t think the finished product conveyed the ‘real message’ they wanted to get across. Much that they’ve tried to come up with a sexy-comedy-romance film, the typical Filipino ingredients were still there and it wasn’t as contemporary as I thought it would be. I was slightly disappointed as I think the film lost the plot right in the middle and because it was struggling to revive the ‘new’ formula they’ve been bragging about, they ended up biting on the traditional Pinoy drama – overused and boring. It is a good film overall but do not expect too much when you see it – not as quality and as liquid as ‘Friends with Benefits’ – it tried hard though.
I’ve named the 11 Pinoy TV Shows that rocked the nation this year. This time, we’ll run through the 11 best Filipino films of the year. The basis for this category is not merely dependant on the box-office record but also on the quality of the film and most importantly, the impact it has left in the history of Philippine cinema. Are you ready? Let the countdown begin!
11. Temptation Island (Marian Rivera, Heart Evangelista, Lovie Poe and Rufa Mae Quinto) – A remake of the 80′s classic Regal hit, Temptation Island revisits the fun, the glamour and the naughtiness of this epic masterpiece. A new breed of sexy and talented stars gave life to the characters we all loved from the original version. Amazing performance award goes to: Marian Rivera
10. Catch Me I’m In Love (Sarah Geronimo and Gerald Anderson) – Both coming from successful team-ups, this was the biggest risk from Star Cinema for 2011. Their tandem proved that chemistry knows no boundaries. The team-up was so successful that it even had a sequel later this year (I Won’t Last A Day Without You). Amazing performance award goes to: Sarah Geronimo
9. Segunda Mano (Dingdong Dantes, Angelica Panganiban and Kris Aquino) – Another horror flick from the Queen of All Media but this time, she proved that she is more than a horror queen; she definitely gave her best performance to date not to forget her amazing support cast headed by the Best Actor himself, Dingdong Dantes. A beautiful and unpredictable storyline too. Amazing performance award goes to: Dingdong Dantes
8. Pak! Pak! My Dr. Kwak (Vic Sotto and Bea Alonzo) – This is memorable because this marks the return of Vic Sotto in the Star Cinema family. This is also his first project with the likes of Pokwang, Zaijan Jaranilla and Bea Alonzo. The story s very straightforward and conventional but still worth watching if you’re feeling blue. Amazing performance award goes to: Zaijan Jaranilla
7. In The Name Of Love (Angel Locsin, Jake Cuenca and Aga Muhlach) – One of the best love stories of all time. Although the ending ruined it for me, I still enjoyed this film and the chemistry between the three main characters is undeniable. Amazing performance award goes to: Aga Muhlach
6. Enteng ng Ina mo (Vic Sotto and Aiai Delas Alas) – A cinematic moment we thought will never ever happen. This is definitely the MMFF 2011′s biggest film and the most successful comedy flick of the year in terms of entertainment value. It was lovely seeing the two royalties (Vic and Aiai) share the big screen. Amazing performance award goes to: Aiai Delas Alas
5. Ligo na U, Lapit na Me (Edgar Allan Guzman and Mercedes Cabral) – A very witty, feel-good, funny and sexy film that changed my perception of independent cinema. The script was very well written and the acting were real and flawless. I love it! Amazing performance award goes to: Edgar Allan Guzman
4. Praybeyt Benjamin (Jimmy Santos, Derek Ramsay, Eddie Garcia and Vice Ganda) – The top-grossing Filipino film of 2011. Why it didn’t top my list? I didn’t feel the impact of this film in terms of the social and cultural push unlike those movies in the Top 3. Very funny though but it lacks some creative juices to make it more fascinating. Amazing performance award goes to: Eddie Garcia
3. Manila Kingpin: Asiong Salonga Story (Carla Abellana, Philip Salvador and Jeorge Estregan Jr.) – The MMFF’s dark horse who swept the major awards this year including Best Picture. It was well written and the execution was very compelling and different from the previous Asiong Salonga biopics. Amazing performance award goes to: John Regala
2. Ang Babae sa Septic Tank (JM De Guzman, Kean Cipriano and Eugene Domingo) – World-class! This is the only Filipino film this year that I am very very proud of and I know it can compete internationally. Very captivating storyline. It is not as exciting as you would expect it to be but mind you, this is a good quality movie. Amazing performance award goes to: Eugene Domingo
1. No Other Woman – Not only did No Other Woman broke box-office records, it also set some high standards when it comes to love stories. Very straightforward storyline but because it was magnificently written, it turned out to be a piece of gem. The simplicity of the concept made it more interesting. It depicts real-life drama which we, Filipinos, love! Amazing performance award goes to: Carmi Martin & Anne Curtis
